In ProgressFoothills Natural Areas Stewardship Agreement: To promote collaboration and long-term stewardship of the City’s Foothills Natural Areas, Salt Lake City will formalize an agreement with key stakeholders and landowners. This agreement will set clear guidelines and responsibilities for improving recreational access, protecting biodiversity and the environmental health of these vital spaces for future generations.
In ProgressComplete the analysis of water consumption by land use type and use it to develop policies that link land use and water planning that can be adopted by December 31, 2025 to comply with state code requirements.
In ProgressTransmit to Council updated Northwest, Avenues, and Capitol Hill Community Plans to align with Plan Salt Lake, Housing SLC, and the growing water smart policies.

In 2025, the agency anticipates approval of the program by the Utah Public Service Commission, adoption of a City ordinance to authorize participation, and issuing the first solicitation for renewable electricity resources.

In ProgressNative Plant Program Partnership: To increase biodiversity and improve the health of public lands, the City will formalize a Native Plant Program partnership with the State of Utah. This partnership will support the continued expansion of biodiversity through native plantings, enhancing water-wise landscaping and improving maintenance efficiency across Salt Lake City Public Lands.
In ProgressTesting Drought-Hardy Turf Species: The City will test regionally appropriate drought-hardy turf species in small areas of its parks. This initiative aims to reduce water consumption and promote sustainable landscaping practices, contributing to the City’s overall water conservation goals.
In ProgressTree Preservation and Urban Forest Expansion: To enhance air quality and strengthen the city’s resilience to environmental challenges, Salt Lake City will create code updates focused on preserving and establishing trees during construction and development activities. These updates aim to maintain and expand the urban forest canopy, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable urban environment.
In ProgressEnhancing Westside Urban Tree Canopy: The City will work to enhance the urban tree canopy and improve the health of trees on the Westside by planting additional trees on City golf courses. Proper care and watering will ensure these trees thrive, benefiting both the environment and community health.
In ProgressAdvocate for the protection of our Wasatch Watersheds and for the Great Salt Lake Shoreline Preserve to preserve water and environmental quality upstream, downstream, and within our city. This includes land acquisitions for conservation purposes in both the Wasatch and GSL Shoreline (both of which are budgeted); shared stewardship with the USFS and State of Utah for forest health and land restoration; and continued efforts in the policy and political spheres.
